European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
