This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
