Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
